Picture the tension….
In light of the last few posts trying to think through a few tensions…here is what I dreamed up (yes, I the shower again….)
Let me know what you think and shoot back….
UPDATE: I guess it would be nice of me to explain my cute pictures here. Here are my thoughts and what these images are “trying” (emphasis there!) to represent. (keep in mind, i am not completely satisfied with them yet, but they are my best shot)
I’ll …

Personal Faith? Communal Witness? Both?
I wonder, has the church made working on our personal faith more important than working on a communal faith? Or, are they impossible to separate? Is it possible to talk about having a personal faith apart a communal faith?
The reason I ask this question is that I often get the sense in America that American Christians (because this is what we teach from the leadership – so its on the heads of us as pastors) don’t …

Over programming a subculture? Underprogramming Incarnational Ministry? Or somewhere in Between….
My co-pastor Brad and I have had numerous conversations about how we want to make sure we don’t over program the church so that people would be able to live missional lives. Our thought has been that in our past experiences, being part of the church meant going to so many “church” things that one was left with little time to share his/her faith. For example, when I was in high school in youth group my schedule …

Struggling….
I am on a continual journey to understand more what it means to lead, communicate and cooperate as a community of faith, focused and active for a missional purpose, in a culture that is so disconnected and busy.

The Well Art Show
We had our first art show at The Well last night. There were about 12 artists (wire art, metal art, painting, photography, marker art and a few other “mediums”). It was a really neat night to meet some new people in our community and continue some new friendships.
I was able to meet up with a couple new friends at the show who are from my area who have bought a bus and they are turning …

Spiritual vs. Secular
Bosch writes in “A Spirituality for the Road,”
“All this seems to support the view that the missionary is supposed to become less and less worldly. The only worldliness he is allowed to have is to experience some difficulty in becoming more and more other worldly.I am increasingly experiencing difficulties with this view of spirituality. Spirituality or devotional life seems to mean withdrawal from the world, charging my battery, and then going out into the world. The image is …

Humilty
Got this quote from LT last night in a conversation. He is not sure where he found it, but man its really good to think about. He’ll probably hate that i say this, but i have seen very few people with the heart for people that LT has. I think you should all aspire to know him or at the very least wish that you did! :-)
“I do not have all the answers.

Breuggemann on Creation and Recreation
In “A Theological Introduction to the Old Testament,” Walter Breuggemann is discussing “The Created Order and the Re-Creation of Broken Order”…
“It is expecially remarkable that the “rule” of the man over the woman is seen as a consequence of sin; hence it stands over againat God’s creational intention…But this state of affairs has not been put in place for all time to come; no new orders of creation are established. Indeed, as with any consequences of sin, or divine …

Thessalonians and a Missional Life
In our neighborhood group we are studying through the book of I Thessalonians together. Last week spent the time reading it out loud together as if we were the church receiving the letter ourselves (this week we were able to spend a little time looking at the background / culture / life of this church which helped us understand it a bit better from a historical perspective). Of course, there is no way to really “put ourselves …

Who are you? Stand up and be counted…
Inspired by Tim Keel’s last post i am curious who all reads here regularly. i have been blogging since December 2003 and have enjoyed the chance to write my thoughts, react to things i read and ramble. I often wonder if anyone actually reads this thing though and since i just changed my blog home with a new domain name (twice in the last two months!) i wonder whether i lost all of you.
so, i …

Telling Stories
One of the things we have been talking about in our community is stories. How as a community we need to embrace and tell the stories that define us. This means both the history of faith (the stories of church history) and the history of our church (the stories of our specific church family). Stories can be so powerful. Its interesting, Nissan or Toyota (not sure which one, i can’t remember) had a commercial on …

New Bosch
I found a little gem of a book on Amazon last week. It is by David Bosch titled “A Spirituality for the Road.” A great little book only 92 pages. So far, its great for where we are trying to head as a church. Here is an excerpt:
Bosch writes in “A Spirituality for the Road,”
“All this seems to support the view that the missionary is supposed to become less and less worldly. The only worldliness … -
