This weekend we are hosting a fashion, art and justice show at The Well. This is the second time we have hosted a fashion show. Last year we did the same thing and ended up with about 250 people in our space and I would guess that 85% of them weren’t from our church (or any church at all for that matter). It was a great night but one of the things it lacked was some obvious sense of hope. There was hope, in fact, some of the models were really impressed that a church would relate to them in this way and it gave some student designers a great chance to have a lower pressure show under their belt. This year however, we wanted...Read More →

All New Stupid-Church Sign Ranking System
For some reason my area is the home of stupid church signs. I use the word stupid in many different ways and thus have formulated my own simply four level “Stupid-Ranking System”: “Stupid-Funny.” These are the signs that are stupid but they are actually kinda clever, funny and even harmless. “Stupid-Stupid” These are the signs that are the ones that cause you to violently roll your eyes. They either don’t make sense, they are not funny or are just plain dumb. “Stupid-Scary” These are the worst signs. They are scary. Often because their message is so hostile to the world. I often wonder whether Churches think these signs would actually want anyone to come to their church. “Stupid-Not-Even-Doctrinally-Correct” These signs are fairly self-explanatory. If you...Read More →

Why Don’t We Do What We Want To Do Even When we have Good Intentions?
I am studying a bit for my sermon next week (yes, I am working ahead!). I am preaching on Romans 12 which we have been looking together each week during our worship gatherings. Which, by the way, has been an amazing practice. We’ve basically been taking about 5-10 minutes and reading and discussing sections of Romans 12 together every sunday morning. It is so helpful to a) look at scripture together as a community and b) keep going back to the same scripture and let it permeate our lives and our life together. Well, more about that some other time… I am looking at all the ways that we are called to give up our own desires for the sake of others and I am...Read More →

thewellpa.com: re-CSSified…
I went to go and fix the menu on The Well’s website late last night and ended up pretty much giving the entire site a face lift. So, what started as a 10 minute project turned into a two and a half hour late-night redesign. The beauty of the process was that with CSSEdit (a program I am growing to love) I was able to change the CSS and see the changes live on my machine with their preview feature. Then I just uploaded the new stylesheet and changed everything over all at once. I really didn’t touch the xhtml except for a few minor validation problems I found. Some of the major changes: New Menu: I finally fixed the menu that had some major...Read More →

If You Have To Blog
Take the parting thoughts of my friend Tom Ward to heart. He writes… One of my greatest disappointments with blogging has been the inordinate amount of attention that I and countless others have spent denigrating men and women with whom we have no direct relationship. I’ve spoken ill of Mark Driscoll, a man I’ve never met, on this blog. It seems to me that blogs, whether Christian or not, have become the new rumor mills, Read the rest of Tom’s post here…

Measuring Missionally
I received a copy of Earl Creps’ book “Off Road Disciplines” a while back and am working my way slowly through it (not because it is such a hard read, but because i am just slow). Even though i have read most of the the missional leadership books out there, I have found it a very helpful, practical book. I think the chapter i have enjoyed the most is his chapter on Assessment: The Discipline of Missional Efficiency. He writes, “Harvard’s Robert Behn observes that ‘what gets measured gets done’ … the metrics employed by an organization have a way of focusing its attention and resources on the goals those measurements are tied to, regardless of whether the g oals have merit or not. So...Read More →

Back.
Melanie and Cole and I are back from vacation in Minnesota. We went to one of my best friend’s wedding and hung out with Brad Jackson and his family for a few days(Brad and I pastored together at The Well for about 6 years before he moved to Minnesota with his family). It was a great trip and I am sure I’ll share more specifics but for now I have about a week’s worth of work to catch up on and a wedding to officiate this weekend.

Watching Redemption.
Melanie, Cole and I are headed out of town on vacation for the next week. It promises to be an incredible week as we are primarily going to participate in my best friend’s wedding. I’ve known Chad since third grade. He moved to our area when his dad started as pastor at our church. We hit it off quickly and have been great friends ever since. Most of our years were spent playing sports together. Little league. Jr Basketball. Jr. Soccer. Varsity Basketball. You name it, we played it together. Our friendship hit some rough times in our post college years. Not so much because we got pissed at each other or anything, but a little because we lived on opposite sides of the country...Read More →

“New” Web Design “Portfolio”
I have updated my web design portfolio a bit. Actually, I just listed the sites I have worked on and put up a featured site on this blog. I have found one of the hardest things to do is actually keep my design site current and relevant. I kind of feel like a landscaper who doesn’t have time to mow his own lawn. So, in a way, I guess I am just installing “Astroturf” so the my “yard” doesn’t get all overgrown and ugly. So, go here if you are interested in seeing some of the work I have done.

New, uh…”Haircut”
This morning in the shower…I got inspired. This is the first time I have ever taken a razor to my head before and I have to tell you, it feels amazing. I only cut myself three times, which I think is a fairly good success rate for the first time. Oh, sorry mom. But at least I waited till after you left last week right? See more pictures of my shiny head here…
