    Whole Life Generosity

    0

In my sermon this week, on the parable of the Foolish Rich Man, I referenced this quote from Tom Sine’s book, The New Conspirators. I absolutely loved this book and would recommend it to anyone who is wondering what kinds of things are going on in some awesome Christian communities these days. Tom writes, “If our view of the Good Life is focused on accumulating consumer goods and experiences for ourselves, instead of looking for opportunities to make a difference in the lives of others, we could totally miss what this journey is really all about. We are indeed called to live under God’s rule, practicing economic generosity and justice-making with all that God has entrusted us. We are invited to join so many who...Read More →

Eugene Peterson’s Advice to Church Planters

    1

JR Briggs, a fellow pastor and one of my best friends in the entire universe, has been corresponding with Eugene Peterson for the last number of years.   They write actual letters.  You know, when pen and paper and stamps and use something called the “mail.” Anyways, sometimes JR lets me read some of the letters from Eugene.  It’s pretty amazing.  He has posted some excerpts from one on his blog for us all to read.   In it, Eugene talks about church planing.  It’s pretty awesome and you can read it on JR’s blog here.

    Thomas Merton on Humility

    2

Today at The Well, Evan Curry preached from the passage in Luke 18 with the Pharisee and the Publican. He spoke at length about the topic of humility.  Fittingly, in my reading tonight I read through some thoughts from Thomas Merton on humility and pride. This is from his book, The New Man. He writes, In a sense pride is simply a form of supreme and absolute subjectivity. it sees all things from the viewpoint of a limited, individual self that is constituted as the center of the universe… If I am the center of the universe, than everything beings to me. I can claim, as my due, all the good things of the earth. I can rob and cheat and bully other people. I can help my...Read More →

The Suburban Mob: A Year Later

    1

It has been exactly a year since I put some of the most significant lessons that God had taught me in the last few years  to words. It was called, “Are You Rioting with the Suburban Mob.” I’ve been reflecting on these thoughts and where we are as a family now, a year later.  I can say that we have put some great effort into refocusing our lives and being aware of the culture we are living in and how it is offering a way of life that has some major roadblocks to a distinctly christian life.  This has expressed itself in different ways.  Some ways we have been successful and other ways have been harder.  For example we’ve made great progress on living more...Read More →
