i have recently been the recipient of both of these approaches in a group in which i am participating, depending on who is leading that particular night. ..there is such a difference. the one approach throws me in the mix with the general population…the other takes me where i’ve been, where I aam now, listens, affirms my progress and steps back and lets the spirit move me forward the next step. i have been trying to figure out the difference…this is it! and why i dont’ respond to the one, even though the thoughts and words spoken are truth. I have been trying to formulate in my mind what was going on, but hadn’t really figured it out. this puts the finger on the issue!

Gerald, there is definatly a balance here. i agree. the exhortation thing is definatly part of pastoring. however, perhaps (just thinking as i type here) the exhortations need to be spoken after very good listening. but, like you said. spirit led.

I like this, but am wondering how we incorporate it into Paul and Jesus’ exhortations and admonitions. Both seemed certain at times of what others needed to do. Perhaps it is a matter of balance…knowing when to be a programer and when to be an environmentalist. No formula, just Spirit led wisdom…
