Todd, after reading this informative post, you have no idea how badly I want to write you a really long email and embed all of my "major points" in the middle of a really long paragraph that rambles on and on about nineteenth century philosophers and their impact on American religion today.

Hah, it's funny you should say that Todd . . . It's our anniversary today! Does writing a message on Facebook count?

Yeah, I was just saying that communication seems to be heading down this silly slippery slope. As for our anniversary, I went with greeting cards and flowers . . . letters take too long to write.

Todd,

Thanks for the post. As a ministry leader who sends out e-mails to people on a weekly basis, I:

1. Found this instructive.
2. Will try to apply it.
3. Am glad to reconnect with you digitally after a long hiatus from blogdom.

Go Brewers! ;)

Ed, great point! My thought is, if you are writing love to your wife letters by e-mail, that's a problem. :) E-mail is not necessarily the context for that kind of deep communication.

I have started to take up another practice when possible. When given the choice between writing an e-mail and making a phone call. Always make the phone call. You will save yourself time (in waiting to hear back) you'll get an immediate answer and you might just have a better chance get the answer you wanted to hear than if you would have sent an impersonal e-mail.

Basically, i think its all about the medium. If i get a letter from someone in the mail, I'm going to read every word.

Now, stop writing love e-mails to your wife and go give her a phone call.

I think you're right, but I want to know why you're right.

Part of it is that we're bombarded with so much information and clog up every second with something that communication is somehow inconvenient. Now, instead of hand writing a letter, we are reduced to simple, quick, e-mails with bullet points. Will love letters ever stoop to this level?

I love you because:
1. You are pretty.
2. You are considerate
3. You send concise e-mails

What's next? Skipping caps or elimatingthespacebarinordertosaveasecondortwo?

What does all of this tell us about our society and the pace of life? On one hand I think we need to adapt to our surroundings and find new ways to be effective in an age awash with information, but at the same time we should consider when enough is enough and trade in our lists for well-crafted paragraphs.
