Breuggemann on Creation and Recreation
In “A Theological Introduction to the Old Testament,” Walter Breuggemann is discussing “The Created Order and the Re-Creation of Broken Order”…
“It is expecially remarkable that the “rule” of the man over the woman is seen as a consequence of sin; hence it stands over againat God’s creational intention…But this state of affairs has not been put in place for all time to come; no new orders of creation are established. Indeed, as with any consequences of sin, or divine judgements…effort should be made to relieve the toil, pain patricarchy and negative effects on nature. Such endeavors harmonize with God’s intentions in creation, though continuing sinfulness impedes the efffort…”
Brad is studying for his message on sunday and shared this with me…i find it worth sharing…some good stuff there…

Todd,
Let me see if I understand this right?
God’s origianl intent before the fall was that “man would not rule over women.” And that one day God will set everything right again. And in the meantime we should try to do all we can do as christians to right what went wrong after the fall??
Interesting observation?? Not sure how this would all play out with regards to the man / woman issue.
Keep plugging away!

Galatians 3:26-29
“You are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus, for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.”
Part of the Lord’s Prayer:
“Thy kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.”

Please allow your chauvanistic brother to butt in. Perhaps the curse is not that Man would rule over woman, but that woman would no longer be content with Man’s headship. It seems to me that Paul grounds the headship of the man in the order of creation rather than the fall (1 Cor 11:6-9), and that the headship of the man is meant to reflect the image of Christ’s headship over the church (Eph 5) and God’s headship over Christ (1 Cor 11). In this way sexuality serves as a vital element of the image of God, for through our mutually compatible genders we image forth aspects of God’s nature and purposes that would otherwise remain hidden. God exalts Christ and Christ “submits himself to him who judges justly.” Man and woman - two persons/one nature. God and Christ - two persons one nature. It should also be noted that Christ’s submission to God is eternal and not merely a product of his incarnation (1 Cor 15:28). Submission is not an evil, but a beauty for it provides the context for sacrificial service and deep trust.
As to the Galatians passage, it seems to me that Paul is trying to establish the theological truth that we are all equals in relation to God, but this does not necessarily imply that God’s great design is to abolish the distinctions between gender, ethnicity, and social status.
Though having said all of this, I agree that the way that man and woman relate to each other currently is NOT the way that God intended. Men use thier strength to marginalize women rather than serves them sacrificially (as Christ the Church) and many women are not content to be women. But what do I know?

Gerald, well thought out and well written.
What do you know? From what I’ve read of your post, quite a lot. But don’t let my comments go to your head!
Really Gerald, I enjoy reading what you write. You have a great
head for straight-forward, clear-headed thinking!
P.S. You too, Scott!
