ESPN Linkage: My 15 Minutes of Non-Fame

October 31, 2008 5 Comments

Most of you know a recent blog post of mine was one of the links in this article on ESPN.com (go to #6 and click the link there).  Needless to say, it was pretty cool. There was a bit of a traffic spike for me from the link but I’m almost sure that is because I wrote everyone I knew and told them to check it out.  Then I posted the news on twitter and facebook.  So, while I had about 150 hits from that one link, I am assuming most of you people were the ones doing the clicking.  But, who really cares.  I just think its cool that an author at ESPN the mag linked to my site.

Most of you are probably wondering how in the world I ended up with that link.  Well, I am almost certain that its because the author searched for “God Hates Philly” and came up with my post.  Go ahead and do it. Better yet, click here and I’ll do it for you.  As you can tell, I am the first entry at the top. (why and how i got there at #1 is a whole other story – that is a post for another day).

But, there is actually a funny back story to this whole ordeal.  I took the picture in the post because I was listening to ESPN radio on the way home and they were talking about the crazy weather in Philly that was effecting the World Series.  They were looking for some pictures so they could see the madness for themselves

This is the pic we're talking about here

This is the pic we're talking about here.

Well, since I was right in the thick of the heaviest show fall I figured I would take out my handy-dandy little iPhone and e-mail a picture to them.  But, by the time I got my camera out and took the picture I had forgotten the e-mail address I was supposed to send it to.  So, i just put my phone away, continued to concentrate on driving in the crazy weather and went home. When I got home, since I had the picture, I figured I would be witty and use it on my blog.  Little did I know that things would come full circle and they would find me and still end up using my picture!

It’s kinda crazy how I took the picture for the purpose of sending it to ESPN and even though I didn’t get to send it to them, it ended up randomly being used on the website!  Kinda nuts if you ask me.

All in all, while it was fun, it was fairly meaningless. It’s not like I make money off my site or I’m selling something.  The only thing that might be effected is my google page rank and my technorati rankings.  If you don’t know what those are, don’t worry about it.

I do have to make one disclaimer.  I don’t think that God hates Philadelphia.  In fact, I’m pretty sure that God loves people, even Philadelphia.

Well actually, now that I think about it… maybe he hates the Cubs…

Crap dude, I go away for a couple weeks and you’re Bigtime now? Good for you.

Also, I can pretty clearly state that God hates Seattle sports fans. Or there’s some ancient Native American burial ground curse or something (which is actually quite likely).

I know want to be known as the guy who knows the guy who was linked on ESPN.

But…only until they need to do a story on “weird sex ideas” and link to my blog.

A friend of mine had a similar experience thanks to a Google search which spiked an entry she had made in her travel blog about how to find good, cheap furniture in Australia (her husband’s job had moved them there for 6 months). Anyway, at the time if you Googled “good cheap furniture” hers was the first entry. As a result, she ended up with thousands of hits on that one post. I have yet to strike Google gold.
