Giving Gifts to Jesus and the Poor
BJ Woodworth, a pastor in Pittsburgh, has some interesting thoughts on Christmas and gift giving…
My daughter Kyra asked me yesterday where gift giving comes from. Katrina (way wife) told her it stems from the shepherds and the wise men bringing gifts to Jesus, Mary and Joseph. True enough. Secondly gift giving comes from St. Nicholas who secretly gave gifts to the poor and needy. So my question then is, how and in what way do we give gifts to God (Jesus) during Christmas and secondly, how and in what way do we give gifts to the poor like St. Nicholas (the root of Santa Claus)?

Todd, I’ve thought a lot about this for the last few weeks. I bought most of my gifts from a “fair trade” organization that sells hand made clothing, jewlery and art from poor artisans in 3rd world situations. Most of the money goes into the pockets of the artisans that make the products.
It’s called Ten Thousand Villages

Other practical things I’ve thought of was to tell a few relatives not to give you gifts, but to donate the money to a charity. It beats getting those meaningless gift certificates that you really don’t care about anyway. Wouldn’t that be more meaningful and less stressful than exchanging gifts that neither person really likes anyway?
