Todd, I've thought a lot about this for the last few weeks. I bought most of my gifts from a "fair trade" organization that sells hand made clothing, jewlery and art from poor artisans in 3rd world situations. Most of the money goes into the pockets of the artisans that make the products.
It's called Ten Thousand Villages

Other practical things I've thought of was to tell a few relatives not to give you gifts, but to donate the money to a charity. It beats getting those meaningless gift certificates that you really don't care about anyway. Wouldn't that be more meaningful and less stressful than exchanging gifts that neither person really likes anyway?
