<em>"I want to do this, but what do I do? Where do I start?"</em>

Here's what I would have said to that person, because to me, character and relationships are what matter most:

"Start with relationships. Ask the adults and children you live with "how can I be a better spouse/parent/room-mate?" Ask "how can I be a better employee?" Ask "How can I be a better friend?"

These are hard questions to ask but if you can ask them and convince your hearers that you really want to know the answers and will listen with humility rather than getting defensive or angry, then I think they'll be happy to tell you. And that will give you plenty to work on"

I think that's what giving one's life is all about.
