If You Have To Blog

Take the parting thoughts of my friend Tom Ward to heart. He writes…

One of my greatest disappointments with blogging has been the inordinate amount of attention that I and countless others have spent denigrating men and women with whom we have no direct relationship. I’ve spoken ill of Mark Driscoll, a man I’ve never met, on this blog. It seems to me that blogs, whether Christian or not, have become the new rumor mills,

    Hey Todd,

I disagree with your friend’s post (I hope I am allowed to do that). I think blogging on a site like wordpress.com and others provides a place where people can write out their thoughts, concerns, joys, sorrows, anger, or a variety of other expressions that sometimes are unable to carry the weight of spoken words.

Concerning the first part of his post (blogs being rumor mills and all), I find that to be a little odd considering that before the invention of the computer and the internet, people were still spreading rumors and gossiping about other people. Watching TV and reading different magazines provides ample support of non-internet gossip what will never cease to exist.

I believe though that blogging (from a Christian and non-Christian perspective) can be both enlightening and meaningful if it accompanies tact. Instead of ‘hosing’ someone with vindictive statements, the blogging world provides a place where people can communicate their concerns on a variety of issues and thoughts and allow other people to respond. Instead of a few faithful people who always seem to ‘have the right answer,’ I have seen personally a wider variety of people who have either emailed me or have posted a comment on my site objectively critiquing my thoughts and posts. People have made me think in different ways and I believe I have been blessed by their comments and emails.

These are just some personal thoughts to consider. If blogging becomes a chore, perhaps they are trying too hard to impress other people with their witty comments or positions.

    I can not agree more.

I also have spoken bad of Mark.

I am glad someone is calling Christians/myself back to integrity.

I guess so Todd, but it’s just so much more fun with slander and gossip. Oh well… I guess I’ll have to do without. Gossip is like those really fattening Ben & Jerry’s Ice creams with 1,000 calories. I love it, but it makes me gain weight like nobody’s business
