Leadership

Dave Fleming on the struggles of leadership

This is an excellent entry about the perils being a leader that gets looked up to all the time. Anyone who is in leadership that has people that are actually close to him/her probably has those people who will “tell it like it is”…for most of us it is our spouse which is good. perhaps the hard thing is hot just having people in our lives who “tell it like it is” but we need to have a small enough ego that we are willing to humbly accept the criticism when it comes.

we are doing some discussion in our community leadership and small neighborhood groups on what it means to be a communty that healthily deals with conflict…its a tough thing to have the maturity to hear a complaint/suggestion without reacting poorly (either by taking it too personally or writing it off all together).

This very morning I sent an e-mail to my pastor that touches on this. Twice in the past month, I’ve been invited to attend a workshop with my pastors and in each case I said yes and then made sure I was available by putting in for vacation for both those days.

Then I heard nothing more from my pastors and the days came and went. No workshops. No word of cancellation. Nothing. This was especially aggravating to me because therefore have been other lapses in communication in recent months — dates, room assignments at church for small groups, and other things — that cause embarrassment, frustration and confusion for the volunteers who are trying to be good soldiers.

So I let the senior pastor know about this stuff. Most of it invovles one certain staff member, but the senior pastor is culpable a bit too. I felt guilty for even bringing it up. But I don’t think this is a habit these guys want to continue. So I brought it up and tried, am trying, to not be bitter about it.
