childI saw this image on CNN.com’s home page.  I quickly averted my eyes as I don’t want to look at this.  I don’t want to think about what it would be like to be carrying my three year old in the same situation.  I have no clue who this guy is.  I don’t know the situation.  All I know is that for many, many people this is their reality.

God, never let me forget that you do not avert your eyes from situations like these.  Your heart breaks when you see this and never let my heart become numb to the fact that millions of people live in poverty, war and death is a natural part of their reality.  Lord, my the Church be an avocate on behalf of all these people.  May the Church be a taste of your inbreaking Kingdom in a world that is needy for some peace…

    This reminds me of that U2 song about wanting to see the world the way God sees it. The lyrics say to Jesus, “When there’s all kinds of chaos, and everyone is walking lame, you don’t even blink, now do you? Or even look away.” But as for us, we do instinctively look away…
