[...] Todd Hiestand has rightly said: [W]hen we only emphasize the individual nature of the gospel we miss out on the bigger picture of the redemptive narrative of Scripture. Jesus came not only to save individuals, He came to redeem all of creation. Churches that focus primarily on individual salvation tend to lose focus on this aspect of the church’s calling. The church’s call to be a “sign, witness and foretaste” of the coming Kingdom are often overlooked when our only concern is getting people to heaven when they die. Here Jesus’ prayer that the Father’s will be done on earth as it is in heaven can be a real and practical manifestation of the local and global church. [...]

[...] This article caught my attention because I have been thinking a lot lately about America’s skewed vision of success and our pursuit of this idea and how unfulfilled it leaves people and also about the need for Christians to live as missionaries in their daily lives and this article discusses this and more… I hear comments such as “so and so just bought their first house..isn’t that exciting?!”…and I am just wondering if I am the only one who this does not excite. Don’t get me wrong I am very happy they have a place to live…but is that what I am striving for? I jog by these houses on their little plots of land that have so much work put into them…why? Why do we segregate ourselves in our homes, families, churches, cultures?? How did buying a home become the goal in life? Here is a blog post from a guy who is trying to restore God’s image in suburban America… which he claims is a God forsaken place…and I think I would have to agree. He also discusses the evolution of suburbia… I stole a couple good (in my opinion) quotes from the article if you don’t have time to read through the entire thing (keep in mind I have pulled them out of context)…but it’s a pretty interesting read overall. It also made me think of this song [...]

[...] Todd Hiestand has identified four areas the suburban lifestyle needs to be challenged by the hope of the gospel. First, we need to speak out against the suburban value of extreme individualism and call Christians back to community. Second, we need to deconstruct the value of consumerism in way that leads instead to sacrificial living. Third we need to question the suburban value of safety and comfort and judge it against the call of the gospel. Finally, we need to understand how our individualism and consumerism lead us to neglect the hurting and needy people in our neighborhoods and cities. [...]

[...] The thing that got my thinking started on the challenges of being missional in the burbs was a paper I wrote on the topic for one of my classes. I’ve been told its a good place to start on this topic but I’ll let you decide for yourself. You can read it here: The Gospel and the God-forsaken, The Challenge of the Missional Church in Suburbia [...]

You probably know this by now but Robert Lupton is doing some clear thinking and good work in this area.. Return Flight is the latest of his books. Glen Smith and Christian Direction represent another effort.. http://www.direction.ca/
