Yup, that's a great question. A lot of folks in both "Institutional" and "Cool" Churches love the community - but Jesus is considered just too dang hard to pursue with any diligence. Some folks'll never get that Jesus is the heartbeat of the Church - others simply need to be challenged again and again and again with things they believe that couldn't possible do and they'll be Jesus along the way.

Todd, I agree with rethinking ways of doing church that makes sense to our particular cultures. Perhaps I wasn't clear. When churches do it in authentic ways I'm all for it. But when it's done because of the trendy nature of it, then I wonder why. There's always the temptation to do something because it works without it fitting the character and makeup of a congregation. When a congregation discovers how God has gifted it...when they see the uniqueness of what God has brought together in the people of the community of faith...when they make that relevent...that's what excites me. thanks...

josh, i guess i don't have a problem with rethinking ways of doing church that make sense to a culture (that's always been the job of missionaries after all). i just want the hard work of service to be what really defines us...

I've always wondered why we've tried to reinvent ways of doing 'culturally cool' church instead of trying to discover better ways of being the church to our community. I guess it's easier to reinvent yourself than to do the hard work of service.

Todd, this is an important point that you make. It is a good constructive criticism of a potential pit fall The Well might face. I hope that those in the "cool church" are submitting their lives to christ as best they can, and in prayer.
