One habit that I've never really taken seriously until just recently is that of scripture memorization. I always put it in the box of something kids do in Sunday School to earn points. Over Christmas break I read Dallas Willard's book, "The Great Ommission" and it kind of shocked me to read him say that he wouldn't be part of a local church that didn't emphasize scripture memorization. As I've practiced this habit I really have experienced the value of communing with God and meditating on His wisdom throughout the day rather than just at set times when I do "devotions". Memorization also allows me to remember important truths that are so easy for me to either forget or minimize in my daily life.

If you haven't read Desiring the Kingdom by James K.A. Smith, you need to. His whole thesis is that we worship long before we come up with a worldview. In other words human beings are affective, liturgical beings who are formed through our habits and practices, not necessarily our intellectual formulations. Obviously there is much more to the book that for me was quite the eye-opener. Makes me wonder about the current method of some denominations' church planting methods of gathering and planning instead of worshiping.
