• Church Signs…moving towards something helpful…

    September 14, 2006

I came across a post today at another website called “Church Marketing Sucks.” (If you are offended at the use of the word “sucks” then I am sorry. It’s their words not mine. But here’s their explanation as to why they use it).

Anyways, I either laugh, cry or want to puke when I see most church signs. They are often either, dumb, offensive, not funny or downright bad theology. The guys at CMS have a great post on “When Church Signs Suck.” Go read it!

Here’s my advice to you if your church has a sign with a marquee:

    Put in scripture.

How can you go wrong with that? Acutally, wait, scratch that. Put in scripture that conveys the grace and compassion of God. Not scripture that tells the world how sucky they are.

    For example,

Good Scripture for a church sign:

    James 5:11
“The Lord is full of compassion and mercy”

Bad Scripture for a church sign:

    Revelation 21:8
“But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars—they will be consigned to the fiery lake of burning sulfur.”

    Just my two cents.

Oh, the best/worst sign i saw recently? Saw this one before Easter this year…

“Beat the Easter rush, come in this Sunday”

Everyone needs to check out the Crummy Church Signs Blog, and the archive at the Crummy Church Signs Site.

You’ll find some amazing examples of utterly odious church marketing. Great for laughs, even though they’re sometimes a little too close to home.
