I’m sitting here in my office checking my e-mail as about 250-300 kids and their parents are here using our space for a concert for the School of Rock in Bucks County.
Its really, really crazy that this many people are here. None of them really have ever been to our church and their rocking out covering the Dead, ACDC, Michael Jackson, Pink Floyd and other classic rock bands. The school or Rock rented our space for the night, so its not really our event or anything (yes, they have to worry about the copyright laws since its their gig). But, it is really neat for us to show hospitality to all these kids and their parents like this.
The only concern I have so far is that I think we’ve done a half poor job of really being hospitable in the true sense of the word. Not only are there only a couple people here from our faith community, but we’re not really getting to know anyone here at all. (Hey, I’m not exempt either! I am sitting in my office!)
While I am so happy to see our space being used in this way, I think we have a lot to pray about and learn. I pray that events like this are truly an incarnational witness… hhmm… witness… what does that mean in situations like this?
Perhaps we’re doing better than I think. But we do have room to grow.
I know that doing things like this for the community is not a “get rich quick” scheme (what I mean is, we’re not going to suddenly have 200 extra people in our worship service tomorrow). But, I pray what we’re doing here has long term effect…
I guess we’re learning along the way…
If only Jack Black were here to show me the way…
